Create Beautiful Designs

Nothing says rustic beauty like real stone.  The image above shows pieces of tumbled travertine set in a brick pattern.  Real stone takes a little more time to install as it needs to be sealed before it is grouted.  There are many types of sealants.  This backsplash was sealed with a regular sealant that kept the natural rustic look.  Oil based sealants bring out the natural colors for a richer look.
Depending upon where the stone was harvested from, the stone will have a range of colors.   We recently did the backsplash pictured below (on the left).  The stone is tumbled travertine out of Turkey, they are square pieces set diagonally.  The stone countertop is a beautiful piece of rust, black and beige granite.   The first photo is of the stone sealed with the standard sealant and grouted.  The next photo is after 3 coats of an oil based sealant which brought out all the colors.  To test what it will look like with an oil sealant, just wet the stone with water. Stone like this is the perfect compliment of colors.  In addition, the tuscan mural adds a personal touch from the customers worldly travels.  A look like this does is not without a higher price tag.  Natural stone is more expensive as it is cut right out of a mountain, making every piece unique.

Stone for the bath floor

There are many types of stone that can be used for floors.  Travertine is very popular these days and comes a variety of beige and brown tones .  Slate also falls in the stone category.  Marble is the most luxurious stone flooring but we caution using it in areas that may accumulate moisture as it becomes very slippery when wet.  In addition, stairways can be tricky to navigate, rubber soled shoes are recommended.

Stone for the kitchen

Stone can be polished for a smooth non-porous surface which is perfect for kitchen countertops or cutting boards.  Granite is one of the most popular stones available and comes in a variety of colors.  It is our personal favorite due to the aged detail that can be seen in the layers.  In the picture below (on the right) pebble stones were used for a mountain cabin's kitchen backsplash.

Stone for the shower walls

Stone shower walls must be sealed well to ensure they are as non-porous as possible.  A good vapor barrier behind the stone is a must.  A natural stone shower pan is great for a non slip surface .   A granite vanity top adds elegance and durability. Compliment the granite with a stone backsplash to tie it all together.

Stone for other areas

Stone is great for a fireplace and hearth, a wood burning stove hearth, the front of a bar (pictured in our gallery), table tops, almost anywhere on a patio and the front of stairs are all excellent ways of making your space have that rustic look.  For more elegance, choose a polished stone.
